Fescue vs. Bermuda: Why We Seed Tall Fescue
North Carolina sits in the transition zone, where summers are hot and winters get cold. The grass you choose decides how your lawn looks all year.
Cool-season
Tall Fescue
- Green almost year-round. Holds its color through winter, dormant only in the hottest stretches.
- Handles shade. Does well on lots with trees and mixed sun.
- Seeded in the fall. Cooler soil and fall rain give seed its best chance, which is why aeration and overseeding happen now.
- Grows in clumps. It thickens with overseeding rather than spreading on its own, so an annual fall refresh keeps it full.
Warm-season
Bermuda
- Loves heat and full sun. Tough, fast-growing and very drought tolerant in summer.
- Turns brown in winter. Goes dormant after the first hard frosts and stays tan until spring.
- Needs full sun. Thins out and struggles in shade.
- Spreads by runners. Fills in on its own, but can creep into beds and walkways and needs regular edging.

Safety First: We Call 811 Before Every Dig
Buried gas, electric, water, telephone and cable lines can sit just below the surface. Before we break ground, we submit a locate request to NC 811, and the utility companies mark their lines for free. North Carolina law requires three full business days of notice, and the marks stay valid for 28 days, so we build that time into your schedule.
Private lines are not marked by 811. Irrigation lines, invisible pet fences, landscape lighting wire, septic lines and private gas or electric lines are your responsibility to identify. Tell us about them when you request your bid, and we will plan around them.

- 1Site review & plan
We look at your photos and the area: sun, soil, how long a screen you need, distance from the house, fence and property line, and any HOA rules. We recommend the right tree and spacing for the job.
- 2Bid & approval
You get a clear written bid through your account with the trees, sizes, quantity and price. You accept it and save a card. You are not charged until the work is done.
- 3811 locate & private line check
We request the 811 locate and wait for all utilities to mark their lines (up to three full business days). We also confirm where your private lines run.
- 4Delivery & layout
Your trees are delivered, we lay each one out at the planned spacing, and we check the layout against your property line and the marked utilities before digging.
- 5Planting
Each hole is dug two to three times wider than the root ball and no deeper, so the root flare sits at or just above ground level. Wire, twine and burlap are removed from the top, and we backfill with your soil amended with organic matter.
- 6Mulch & deep watering
We add a 2 to 3 inch mulch ring kept back from the trunk, then water each tree in deeply so the soil settles around the roots.
- 7Cleanup & care guide
We clear the site and give you a written watering and care schedule for your trees, so they establish strong.

Common Questions
How long from my bid to planting day?
Usually about one to two weeks after you approve the bid. The 811 locate takes up to three full business days by law, and the rest depends on tree availability and the weather. We confirm a firm date with you.
Do I need to call 811 myself?
No. We request the locate for the dig area. You just need to tell us about any private lines (irrigation, pet fence, lighting, septic) since those are not marked by the utilities.
When is the best time to plant?
Fall and early spring are ideal. Cool weather and steady moisture help roots establish. We do plant in other seasons, but summer heat means more watering.
How often do I water new trees?
Slow, deep watering at the base, usually two to three times a week for the first month, then about weekly through the first year unless you get good rain. We give you a written schedule for your trees.
Will deer eat my arborvitae?
Deer do browse arborvitae in some areas. If you see a lot of deer, tell us and we'll recommend options like holly.
Where should the trees go relative to my property line and house?
We space trees based on their mature width, and we can work from your survey. Please confirm your property line and any HOA rules or setbacks before planting, since we plant where you direct us.
